Title: Pte. Ashley Goatham of Bredgar
Post by: Dave Smith on November 01, 2021, 12:21:18 PM
grandarog. Many thanks for that most interesting but sad account of a brave Kent soldier of the Zulu wars.( Really, I should be thanking Helen Allinson who wrote it but you put it on the KHF). The miss-spelt name probably arose from the S.A. name for a Tribal Chief's area, Induna. From his letters, Ashley sounds very well educated for a private soldier, the mention of Borden makes me wonder whether, as he originated from there, he maybe was educated at Borden( Grammar School)?   JW. Like you, my RAF friends & I have always said how lucky we were not to have been of the age where we had go to fight in a war.
