Title: Dover WW1 ship repair
Post by: johnfilmer on January 31, 2021, 06:43:15 PM
My mother's Uncle, Alfred Colyer (born 1891), like his father Walter, worked in Chatham Dockyard. The 1911 Census has him as an engine fitter. Towards the latter part of WW1 he was in Dover, assessing ship's mechanical repairs and going out on their trials to check the results. He married in 1919 and was described as a Dockyard Overseer.

I have a single notebook of his from this period and attach three pages as samples of its contents. I have also compiled a list of the ships mentioned in the notebook so should any be of interest just ask for their details.
He later moved to Falmouth and by the outbreak of WW2 was Assistant Engineering Manager, Ship Repair. He was very keen on football and was involved in club and league organisation.

John Filmer.
Is there any mention of ships in the `Dover Patrol`- My father was on `mine sweepers`- 1914- 1918 - A Scottish trawler was the `Grant Hay -  based at Dover ?  any mention.

Slightly off the main topic, but I found a simple 6" x 4" folded sheet that was Alfred Colyer's Certificate of Employment In Essential Services in War, in Falmouth during WW2.
