Not the same, but a related problem: many years ago I was born, and my parents had agreed on John (after Wesley) and Martin (after Luther). Dad registered me as John Martin, but Mum simply told the nurses that I was Martin. This was not a problem for many years, on official forms I either underlined or used block capitals for MARTIN, and lower case/small caps for John. Then computers came along! Well written code has a space for "Known as:" or "Nickname:", badly written code just wants first name and surname. For instance at the bank once I had a check which just used "Martin", and the cashier (all of 20) tried to explain v e r y s l o w l y that my "legal name" was "John" and would not accept it (I just went to another branch and used the ATM). My hospital records now have me as "Martin John"! Ah well, as the Yorkshire saying goes: "Call me ought you like - just don't call me late for dinner".
