A bit of further digging, I had asked the question before completely engaging brain....
It's one of Ancestry's misinterpretations/transcription errors. He was a G.P. He was a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians at Edinburgh - LRCPE, but also a Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries, London - LSA Lon. He held an M.A.
I cannot edit or report that as wrong, the field is fixed.

I think it may be General Practitioner, Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. If he was in the army then Lt. could be Lieutenant but I have no idea about what A.M.A. could stand for.

Cryptic initials on 1881 Census

A William J Whitten is shown in the 1881 Census as living at 517 Commercial Road, he is married to a distant cousin, whose mother was born in Sandwich.
His profession is shown as a series of initials: G.P.L.R.C.P.E.Lt A.M.A.
At the 1891 Census he is simply described as a Medical Practioner, and at the time of his marriage in 1874 is described as a Surgeon.
Any clues as to what this trail of letters means?
