A bit late replying  but...
My late Hubby's ancestors were the Scott family and buried there. Sadly we never visited while he was still here. The Balliol name ran through the family . Very interesting thank you CAT  x

On a recent visit to this church, I was surprised to see this monument against the south wall of the chancel (the door next to it providing access into the south (Scott) chapel). The monument is regarded as being a rare 'heart' shrine and possibly relates to the burial of the removed heart of either William de Valence, or John Balliol, both of which have links with the church in the late thirteenth century. It is recorded that the shrine is now empty, but it is one of only two 'heart' shrines known in Kent, the other being at Leybourne.
