More shafts and tunnels at Dover Castle.

Back in the 1950s and 1960s much of area outside the moats of Dover Castle was covered with self sown sycamore saplings. One such area was between Constable's Bastion and the road leading up to Canon's Gate.Below the moat were earthworks in the form of a wide shallow trench. This was thickly covered by saplings. As far as I remember there were two shafts in this section of earthworks with another at the foot of Constable's Bastion.A fourth shaft was situated on a higher level nearer Canon's Gate.A steep slope connected the levels with rough steps cut in it.
Brother Ted and I selected a shaft which was on the lower level and less deep.Just a flimsy wooden paling fence was around the top of shaft and it was falling down anyway. We obtained a sapling and clambered down.A tunnel led off leading to another shaft ,the top of which was in the moat.Near the middle of the tunnel it widened to form two small rooms. We then returned to our sapling and climbed out.
