Some years ago in Sittingbourne it was decided to demolish a large concrete air raid shelter which stood in Central Avenue near Phoenix House and the Library.
A few local contractors tried and failed to break it down. Help was sought by the council from the Army.
A Squad of he Gurka Engineers from Maidstone with their heavy Army equipment came along and smashed it up in a few days. Job Done.

History of the Gurkhas in Kent

Does anybody have any knowledge to share about the history of the Gurkhas in Kent?

I know that the Gurkha Engineer Squadron formerly based at Kitchener Barracks in Brompton relocated to Invicta Park Barracks in Maidstone and that the Gurkha Rifles are at Shorncliffe near Folkestone, but other than that, I know nothing.

The prompt for this question is that I have a Gurkha family moving in next door.
