Mr. Auger`s Farm.

I submitted this article on the old site.
A leaflet arrived via the letter box - stating a new grocery shop would open soon.
As we lived at the very top of Castle Road then, my mother sent me down the hill
to the shop, when it opened. These houses on the even side, had  many steps to
climb. Carrying a bag & money - I ran down to the shop - I found in the front room
one trestle table, with a few cans on it. `Hello sunny `said a plump lady `you are
my first customer, as I only opened up today. I gave her the list `oh! ` she said
I have only got a few cans, the rest is coming later. I left with a few cans & less
money, then run up the hill. ` Is that all you got `mother said. ` More in later `I said
She done well later. It`s near `Mrs.Smitherman`s shop - at 205, but on the other side.
This was in 1935 - Just remembered it was Mrs. Doughty`s shop.

castle261, from your posts it looks like you used to live in Castle road when you were a youngster. I have a Kelly's listing of Castle road from 1933 if you are interested in seeing it.

     I remember in the 50s riding a ginger pony of Mr Auger's over the fields what is now the pitch and putt course.

Despite a lot of redevelopment I think the wide path is still there, back of the old infant school.

I remember in the 1938 era, Mr. Auger had a farm at Snodhurstl Bottom in Chatham
He used to have his cows driven down the fields, to the slaughter house entrance

in Castle Road. I used to watch them being driven along a wide path, at the back of
Henry Street. The path was behind the Elephant & Castle. Would be behind `Peters`
fish bar, as the correct location.
