Title: Nags Head Lane, Rochester
Post by: Smiffy on October 11, 2019, 07:53:18 PM

Nags Head Lane entrance from the High street in 1962 showing the corner of the Nags Head pub on the left and the hairdresser and cafe mentioned in another post by Lyn L on the right. The building housing the hairdresser and cafe has since been removed to allow for a much wider entrance. Here's a question I don't know the answer to - was the pub named after the lane, or the lane named after the pub?

Thank you Smiffy for posting the pic.  It was good to see.
Obviously I was wrong saying it was further back , but nice to see there was a hairdressers next door and my old brain had taken that in. Also I couldn't for the life of me remember the cafe's name . Their surname was Mellor , I do remember that and also Elaine the girl I mentioned in the post. ;)  couldn't really forget that could I.

In case you can't see it properly, the cafe's name is Cafe Royal - sounds very upmarket :) They are both already there in a similar view I have from 1948 so must have been quite popular.

I could read Cafe Royal , but the hairdressers name escaped me ? Eyes can see alright, it's the ears that don't work  ;) . Even enlarged the pic and still couldn't read it Maison something George ? could even be geezers.  ;D It isn't of course and I didn't use it , I had two ready made sister in laws instead.

Yes, it's Maison Georges, and in 1948 they were florists as well as hairdressers.

The Nags Head is supposed to be haunted by a spirit of a prostitute named Aggie.
Years ago before the Pub under the site was occupied by stables and Police Cells and they believe she hanged herself in one of these cells.
Also the 400yr old Pub is on a corner which was known as Hangman's Lane where local criminals were executed on gallows.
So it appears the Pub wasn't named after the Lane but the Pub was named after the Nags either in the stables or the Nag that hung herself in the Police cell thus passing on the name to the Lane as Nags Head Lane??
